“Escorts” are government-hired assassins who are tasked with killing government officials. In order to pay back a guy named Mo for taking care of him and his child, Dao Ma sets out on the road as a wandering fighter. On their trip back to Mo’s town, they see a victim of the “rakshasa”—man-eating demons. The Sui dynasty’s final years see an upsurge in rakshasa victims, violence, slavery, and vicious soldiers. Dao Ma soon finds herself caught up in the chaos.
